Trekking Hawaii's mission in Big Island tourism is to offer our clients an
escape from the city hustle and a view into the heart of older
Hawaii.
We are not aimed at satisfying the masses. We are not located
downtown and we don't pick you up at your hotel in an air conditioned
bus. What we do offer are custom, kayak or hiking eco-adventures
to some of the less trampled and more spectacular areas of the Big Island.
Our
Kayak Sailing Instruction/Tour is now available with only a 2 person
minimum. Experience the Hobie Adventure Island kayak/sailing hybrids.
There is no boat that's easier to learn to sail. It's manually powered
either by paddling or pedal drive and the sail is roller furling so
it's easy to size the sail to progress at your own pace.
Cost for a 4 hour Kayak-Sailing Instructional Tour:
$195 per person (2 person minimum) A Private Instructional tour is also
available at $$250 per person (also with the 2 person minimum)
All participants are supplied with required safety gear as well as
individual waterproof VHF radios so we can keep in contact even if
sailing at some distance from one other. You're guide is a certified
lifeguard, an EMT and has the most kayak/sailing experience of anyone
on the island.
We've tested these boats in some serious conditions... Triple overhead
Waipio surf, winds to 40mph, 12' breaking seas and we've crossed the
Alinuihaha channel (photo top left) between The Big Island and maui
twice. Not that we'll be taking novice sailors out in any of the
conditions above, but it's nice to know these boats have been proven in
our toughest conditions.
Here is a link to a slideshow of the Adventure Islands, in action, along with some great whale photos to give you a feel for the Adventure Island experience.
Kayak Snorkel Trip: We take you out on a kayak/snorkel trip in the South Kohala area. This
area has some of the islands better snorkelling and best weather. Sea
turtles reside here year round and the whales frequent this coastline
during the winter months, Dec-March. Price $79p/p (3 1/2 hour trip) 4
person minimum.
Kayak Surfing combines the ease of kayaking
with the excitement of riding waves. It's far more easy to learn than
board surfing and for most people acually provides a higher
excitement/fun ratio than learning on the board. Cost for a 3 hour
lesson, $125 per person (2 person minimum) Location South Kohala, surf
permitting
Kayak Fishing is an option which is geared toward those wishing to
experience what it's like to Kayak Fish along the Big Islands
Kona/South Kohala Coast accompanied by an experienced Kayak
Fisherman/guides. Kayak Fishing Trip (all gear included) $250p/p for a
six hour day
Some of the more adventurous visitors will likely be interested in
locations and itineraries which the tour companines are not able to
offer. If you are the adventurous type, consider joining the Big Island Kayak/Adventure club.
This allows you to be part of a local club, which opens up more areas
of the island, allowing you to experience far more of the Big Island
treasures, while still travelling with experienced Big Island Trekkers.
Kayaking the Valleys: Waipio to Waimanu to Keokea (12 miles), getting
in and out of Waipio/Waimanu valleys is surf dependant. Participants
must be comfortable getting wet. Tipping the kayak coming in through
the surf is very possible but invariably ends up with the kayaker
standing up in waist deep water, laughing heartily and walking up a
sandy beach. The spectacular 12 mile coastline passes seven major
valleys and can be done in a single day. Or Waimanu is also designated
as a state campground so if you'd rather make it a multiday trip,
you're welcome to put in your name with the DLNR for a ($12 p/p)
camping permit.
Higher winds and rough water are regularly encountered along this
coast. It's usually not a major problem with rudder equipped kayaks
(which we personally use and rent) and as long as someone in the group
has a good amount of kayak/ocean knowledge . Also we usually prefer to
use kayaks outfitted with sails which make the downwind miles pass by
much easier without as much physical exhaustion.
Flying (sightseeing) the Big Island in a Cessna 172: If you're a member
of our Big Island Kayak/Adventure club you're welcome to join us for a
flight and just pitch in on flight expenses. Kelly owns his own Cessna
172. He is a VFR rated pilot, (not a commercial pilot) and he's been
regular flying around the island/state with friends, family and
visitors for many years.
Other kayak areas and hiking destinations are also possible through the
Kayak Adventure Club. Hiking over the top of 13,000' Mauna Loa through
the snow (wintertime) is pictured right. The cost of a custom adventure
depends on logistics. Drop off at one location and pickup at another
makes some (one way) adventures a possibility that wouldn't
otherwise be considered . Multi-day trips include meals and camping
gear.
One of the possibilites we use with the Kayak Adventure Club heading
into Waimanu Valley is that half of our group can hike in (going light)
just carrying water, the other half kayak in (carring all the gear) and
participants may trade modes of transport for the exit leg if they
choose. We also have kayaks with sails designed to work well on our
less visited, windward coasts allowing us to cruise downwind through
what would otherwise be difficult paddling conditions....
Send us an Email
or give us a call (808 990-6699) and give us an idea of your timeframe
and if a customized Big Island Kayak/HikingAdventure club outing would
be of interest to you. We'll let you know what we can make do to make a
Big Island Adventure a memorable part of your Big Island experience..
