Trekking Hawaii's mission in Big Island tourism is to offer our clients an
escape from the heart of the city and a view into the heart of older
Hawaii.
We are not aimed at satisfying the masses. We are not located
downtown and we don't pick you up at your hotel in an air conditioned
bus. What we do offer are custom, kayak and/or hiking eco-adventures
to some of the less trampled and more spectacular areas of the Big Island.
Kayak Snorkel Trip: We can get you out on a kayak/snorkel trip in the South Kohala area.
This area has some of the islands better snorkelling, best weather, sea turtles reside here year round and the whales frequent this coastline during the winter months. Price $79p/p (3 1/2 hour trip)
Kayak Fishing is another option which is geared toward those wishing to experience what it's like to Kayak Fish along the Big Islands Kona/South Kohala Coast accompanied by an experienced and successful (Big Island) Kayak Fisherman/guide. Kayak Fishing Trip (all gear included) $200-250p/p for a six hour day
Some of the more adventurous visitors will likely be interested in locations and itineraries which the tour companines are not able to offer. If you are the adventurous type, consider joining the Big Island Kayak/Adventure club. This allows you to be part of a local club, which opens up more areas of the island, allowing you to experience far more of the Big Island treasures, while still being accompanied by experienced Big Island Trekkers.
Kayaking the Valleys: Waipio to Waimanu to Keokea (12 miles), getting in and out of Waipio/Waimanu valleys is surf dependant. Participants must be comfortable getting wet. Tipping the kayak coming in through the surf is very possible but invariably ends up with the kayaker standing up in waist deep water, laughing heartily and walking up a sandy beach. The spectacular 12 mile coastline passes seven major valleys and can be done in a single day. Or Waimanu is also designated as a state campground so if you'd rather make it a multiday trip, you're welcome to put in your name with the DLNR for a (free) camping permit.
Higher winds and rough water are regularly encountered along this coast. It's usually not a major problem with rudder equipped kayaks (which we personally use and rent) and as long as someone in the group has a good amount of kayak/ocean knowledge . Also we usually prefer to use kayaks outfitted with sails which make the miles pass by much easier without as much physical exhaustion.
Flying (sightseeing) the Big Island in a Cessna 172: If you're a member of our Big Island Kayak/Adventure club you're welcome to join us for a flight and just pitch in on flight expenses. Kelly owns his own Cessna 172. He is a VFR rated pilot, (not a commercial pilot) and he's been regular flying around the island with friends, family and visitors for many years.
Other kayak areas and hiking destinations are also possible through the Kayak Adventure Club. Hiking over the top of 13,000' Mauna Loa through the snow is pictured right. The cost of a custom adventure depends on logistics. Drop off at one location and pickup at another makes some adventures a reality that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Multi-day trips include
meals and camping gear.
One of the possibilites we use with the Kayak Adventure Club heading into Waimanu Valley is that half of our group can hike in (going light), the other half
kayak in (carring the gear) and participants may trade modes of transport for the exit leg if they choose. We also
have kayaks with sails designed to work well on our less visited, windward coasts
allowing us to cruise downwind through what would otherwise be difficult
paddling conditions....
