| November 25th 2006:
Steve Huesser has been paying close attention to the fishing conditions over the past years and picked the weekend of Nov. 25th 2006 for the Fishing Tournament.
The fishing had been really bleak through Sept, October and into November and finally the Mahi resumed biting in the couple weeks before the tournament date. As in years past (the weekend after Thanksgiving) the winds stayed light and the fish were again biting making for desirable kayak fishing conditions.
At the weigh in we soon realized that there were a large number of fish hauled in. Besides the winning entries, anglers were filling coolers and fish bags.
In the offshore Category:
3rd place went to Thomas Wyatt with a 12lb Mahi
2nd place went to John Whitman with a 13lb Mahi
1st place went to Matt Wilson with a 17.5 lb Mahi
In the Inshore species:
3rd place went to Steve Kishimoto with a 10.75lb Kahala
2nd place went to Max bonk with a 11.25lb Omilu
1st went to Patrick Wilson with the monster 36lb Barracuda
3rd place winners received really fine quality fillet knives
made in Switzerland by Forschner
2nd place received Seven2 Carbon Fiber "Iso" paddles
1st place winners received Scrambler Angler XT kayaks
The inshore division was tight with many other fish coming in within 2lbs of the winners. Steve Kishimoto, in additon to getting the 3rd place inshore award fish also pulled in a good sized Kagami Ulua (somewhat rare) and a fat Island Jack. Max, in addition to geting 2nd for inshore fish had another seven good sized/good eating catches.
We had a total of 18 anglers entered and six made the awards so it turned out that besides having fun and catching fish, entrants had a 30% shot at making the awards.
We had people that were very happy with the one day, give it your best shot, event. Others probably would have been more happy with a 2 or 3 day format.
I do know that there were some that would have appreciated a motorized kayak or kayak spearfishing category but until we see the numbers approaching that of the paddle fishing entrants we can't reasonably see giving away more kayaks as prizes for a division with just a couple of entrants.
Our next tournament is set for early June 2007. I will be a two day event this time.
Steve and I would like to thank all the entrants for making this contest such a great sucess. I know there were more that wanted to get entered but time restrictions or schedule conflicts made it impossible for some. We'd welcome any comments or suggestions to improve the tournament.
